Newell – A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence “Bud” Lampe was held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at O.L.G.C. in Fonda. Burial with military honors was held at Mt. Zion Catholic Cemetery, Fonda. Bud died January 18, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Newell at the age of 90.
Lawrence Bernard “Bud” Lampe was born on December 8, 1927 in Palmer, Iowa to Laurence and Ellen (Drealan) Lampe. In 1945, immediately after graduating from high school in Fulda, Minnesota, Bud joined the United States Navy and served from 1945-1949. He served in the South Pacific, piloting Higgins boats and cleaning nuclear testing and POW burial sites. On September 2, 1950, Bud married Eleanor Reiff at O.L.G.C. in Fonda and together they celebrated nearly 67 years of marriage before Eleanor’s death in August, 2017. Bud worked as a farmer all his life. He raised crops, cattle, horses and sheep. He was a 4th Degree Knight, served on the Fonda Public School Board, OLGC Parish Council and Finance Committee, served on the board of the Fonda Golf Course, and was a member of the Fonda Town and Country Boosters.
Bud is survived by his children Marlene (John) Cimpl of Columbus, NE, Richard Lampe of Fonda, Steve Lampe of Newell, and Eileen (Jim) Hornor of Fonda, 13 grandchildren: Erin Nahorny, Amy Evans, Megan Cimpl (all of Columbus, NE), Jennifer Bohn (Lincoln, NE), Kristine Naidech (Chicago, IL), Kari Lampe (Columbia, MO), Kayla Banks (Champaign, IL), Eric Lampe (Des Moines, IA), Jill Riedel, Amanda Smith, Molly Hornor (all of Sioux Falls, SD), Michael Hornor (Fonda, IA), Jennifer Lampe (Early, IA) and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jim Lampe and sister Joanne (Danny) Plantz both of Pocahontas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ellie, sons David, Jerome and Michael Lampe, and brothers Eugene and Merle Lampe.
