Lake City--Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph Gassman was held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lake City with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lake City.
Joseph Leo Gassman, 82, of Lake City, passed away October 2, 2018 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City from complications of West Nile Virus, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Joe was born on November 9th, 1935 in Howard, South Dakota. His family moved south of Lake City at age 3. He received his education in the Lake City school system, graduating from Lake City High School in 1954. Joe was in the Army Reserve for 6 years.
Joe was united in marriage to Angeline Irlbeck on August 3rd, 1963, at St. Joseph's Church in Dedham, officiated by Fr. Henry Meyer.
They made their home south of Lake City where they raised their six children. He was a lifelong farmer and still active with a cow-calf herd. Joe didn't mind doing things the hard way. He never backed down from a hard days work and his humble ways.
He immensely enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping, especially with grandkids and shared all of his knowledge of these activities with them. He always had the energy to keep up with them and always had a special connection with them.
Most of his farming career consisted of feeding chickens, hogs, cattle, along with corn and soybean production and a lot of hay baling. He also had a passion for beekeeping. Joe always had time to enjoy good lengthy conversations, whether it was the latest news or farm talk. He also enjoyed playing Euchre.
The Rainbow Park and river area near their home provided him and his family with many memories and years of entertainment and appreciation. Joe was a man of strong faith and was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Lake City.
Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Angeline, daughter Karen Gray, (Lois) and children Jesse and Lauren , daughter Joan Reicks, (Lance) and children Sara, Alex, Anna and Emma, daughter Patty Baumhover (Dave) and children Kelsey, Allison, Kyle and Brent, son Dr. Rob Gassman, (Carrie) and children Mandie, Katie, Brandon, Kadon, Bradon, Jadon and Brigley, daughter Lori Gruhn (John) and children Abby, Justin, Nicholas and Macy, and son Kevin Gassman (Chanda) and children Taylor, Grant and Kinley. Also surviving are a sister Phyllis Belcher, brother-in-law Terry McDowell, brother-in-law Edward Irlbeck Jr., and sister-in-law Katherine Dentlinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Clara Gassman, father and mother-in-law, Edward and Katherine Irlbeck, brother-in-law Donald Irlbeck, sisters-in-law Darlene McDowell and Dorothy King.
