Lake City – Evelyn Johnson, 89, died Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 18th at Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City with Pastor Roy Karlen officiating and burial in the Lake City Cemetery.
Evelyn Ruth (Short) Johnson was born February 28, 1929 in Lake City, Iowa. Parents were Alva Mason (A.M.) and Helen (Hungerford) Short. Evelyn graduated from Lake City High School in 1947 then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for one year. She married Darryl E. Johnson on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949 at Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City, Iowa.
Evelyn helped Darryl with their farming operation for over 60 years while busy raising a family of four children. For 70+ years Evelyn played the organ at Woodlawn Christian Church for Sunday morning service as well as many weddings and funerals. She also played for church services in Mesa, Arizona during the winter months. Evelyn was very active in the singing group called “The Songbirds” while in Mesa. Evelyn enjoyed volunteering for the Hospital Auxiliary and working in the Gift shop. She was also a member of Monday Club and gave many programs in the Woodlawn Christian Church Women’s groups. Evelyn reminded her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren many times over the years, of the Bible verse Psalm 118:24 “This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Evelyn is survived by four children, son Ron (Kathy) Johnson of Rockwell City, daughters Sherry (Dave) Kolbe of Clemmons, NC, RoxAnne (Scott) Crandall of Lake City and Valerie (Mark) Mapel of Lake City along with several grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Darryl, an infant brother William Austin Short, her parents and two great-grandchildren.
