Daisy Young had a strong will for life. On March 9th, nine days prior to her 102nd birthday, she passed peacefully with her children at her bedside holding her hands. Daisy was one of six children born to Tom and Bertha Jarvis in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota on March 18, 1917. The Jarvis family moved to Coon Valley Township when Daisy was a toddler. Later, they moved to the farm north of Sac City where Daisy and her siblings lived out their childhood and teenage years. Daisy walked long distances to attend country school, then went on to graduate from high school in Sac City in 1934. After graduation, Daisy moved to Des Moines where she worked as a Nanny for two years. Soon her small-town roots were calling her back home. After moving back to Sac City, she had various jobs, working at the bakery, Lange’s Creamery, and Morey’s Grocery Store. On October 29, 1944 Daisy married the love of her life, Gerald Young, also known as Babe. The wedding took place in South Sioux City, Nebraska while Babe was on leave from the Army. They had three children; Bill, Larry who passed away shortly after birth, and Janet. On March 31, 1961 Daisy and her family were baptized together at the Methodist Church in Sac City. She remained an active member of the church and the Women’s Circle. Daisy and Babe enjoyed traveling, including day trips to Omaha and Sioux City, and dancing at Cobblestone and Lakewood Ballroom. They both enjoyed golfing until Babe’s passing on September 29, 1980 at the young age of 57. Daisy continued to play golf well into her 80’s. She also enjoyed bowling and playing bridge, but most of all her joy came from spending time with her family in Minneapolis and Iowa City where we made many beautiful memories. Daisy was a cancer survivor. Her strong will for life helped her beat lung, breast, and colon cancer.
Daisy is survived by her son Bill [Joan] Young of Iowa City, daughter Janet [Doug] Watsabaugh of Minneapolis, grandchildren Jared Watsabaugh of Minneapolis, Kelsey Watsabaugh of Minneapolis, and Megan Young of Lamoni. She also has two great grandchildren, Ashton and Leta, and many nieces and nephews.
Daisy is preceded in death by her husband Gerald, son Larry, parents Tom and Bertha Jarvis, brothers Arthur Jarvis, Willard Jarvis, Raymond [Dorothy] Jarvis, Wilbur [Ethel] Jarvis, and sister Shirley [Garland] Meyer.
Daisy’s celebration of a life well lived was Saturday, April 20th at the Methodist Church in Sac City.
