Lake City—Joyce Hook, age 70, died Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City with Pastor Roy Karlen officiating and burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, Auburn.
Joyce Hook was born on July 20, 1948 in Manning, Iowa to Howard and Geraldine (Nelson) Burns. She graduated from Audubon High School with the class of 1966 and then went on to attend Stewart College of Cosmetology in Des Moines. Joyce worked as a hair dresser for Marlys Davis in Audubon for 4 years and then moved to Lake View where she worked for Sandy Gross. She met Ronnie Hook while working in Lake View and they married on May 4, 1974 at the Methodist Church in Carroll, Iowa. Joyce and Ronnie moved to Auburn where she continued to work with Sandy Gross as well as a self-employed hairdresser. After Ronnie died in 2002 Joyce moved to Lake City where she worked as a hair dresser for Lena Knight and was also a hair dresser for Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City. Joyce was a Hospice volunteer and she also volunteered for the Capri Theatre in Lake City for 15 years. She enjoyed cross stitching, reading and especially helping others.
Joyce is survived by her brothers Jack Burns of Glidden, Ken (Jolene) Burns of Guthrie Center and John Burns of Emmetsburg; sister Karen Burns of Nampa, Idaho; brother-in law Monte (Evelyn) Hook of Carroll and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronnie in 2002, sister Jerilyn Burns, in-laws Levi and Ethel Hook and sister-in-law Judy Burns.
