Lake City – Mary A. Nelson, 92, died Monday, June 10, 2019 at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Lake City Union Church with burial in the Lake City Cemetery.
Mary Ann Van Heiden Nelson was born on April 2, 1927 in Ackley, Iowa to Anton and Bernice (Schultz) Van Heiden. After graduation she attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and Simpson College in Indianola and then taught 4th grade at Lincoln school in Lake City. On August 8, 1959, Mary married Bernard Nelson at the Presbyterian Church in Lake City. Mary served as the secretary for Central School and the Union Church in Lake City. She was also a member of PEO, Monday Club, QC Club, Book Club, and Union Church Circle and was a past 4-H leader.
Mary moved to Lake City for a teaching career at an early age and never had a desire to leave. After spending years on the farm with her husband Bernard, Mary moved to town 30 plus years ago. She cherished the town, the farming community, her church, her various activities or groups, and most of all, her friends. She spoke fondly and often about her friends over the years which included traveling on out of town trips, on day trips or just getting together with friends after church. While spending this past winter in West Des Moines, close to her daughter and son-in-law, the topic of moving back to her house in Lake City was a weekly conversation. To her delight, she returned to Lake City, living independently in her own home for the past 2 plus months.
While Mary cherished her family, friends and home, she also loved her 2 cats, JJ and Winnie. As many of you know, her favorite color was red and she wore it proudly.
Mary is survived by her daughter Susan and her husband Scott Coombs of West Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard in 1985, sisters Betty, Abigail, Agnes, Janice and Janet, and brothers William, Skip and Sidney.
Memorials may be left for the Lake City Library or the Lake City Union Church.
