Lake City – Jim Ewing, 61, died Friday, December 6, 2019 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 13, 2019 at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City with burial in the Lake City Cemetery.
James Lee Ewing was born on November 29, 1958 in Lake City, Iowa, to Lawrence “Shorty” and Billie (Walker) Ewing. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1977 then completed the Industrial Electronics program at Iowa Central Community College. Jim worked for Watters Appliances in Lake City, Carroll and Pocahontas then owned Jim’s Service Center.
Jim is survived by his sisters Mary Becke of West Des Moines and Carol (Richard) Boger of Ankeny; nieces and nephews Larry Becke, Rob (Patti) Becke, Bob (Jean) Boger, Traci Boger, and Kyra Heithoff; and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother David Ewing; sister Kathy Ewing; and brother-in-law Les Becke.
Jim never met a stranger, only potential friends. He had season tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs for years and made lifelong friends with people in nearby seats. He often took family and friends along to share in his love of football and the excitement of being there.
His love and concern for guiding youth in a Christian direction led him to be a counselor at youth summer camp, youth group trips to Washington D.C., Carmen concerts and many Bible studies.
He loved to plan and participate in family vacations and anything to do with our family. His latest way of sharing was his pontoon boat. He would be happiest when taking people for boat rides. He even used it to carry classmates in the parade at his 40th high school class reunion. He loved fishing and playing basketball at Opportunity Living twice a week with a group of friends.
His love of people led him to give a helping hand to anyone who needed anything, even strangers. He lived the meaning of Matthew 25:40, “The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
