Rheta Jean Blanchfield Brumm, 98, died January 5, 2020 in California. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City with burial in the Lake City Cemetery.
Rheta, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend passed away on January 5, 2020 at the age of 98. She was born in Lake City, Iowa, on October 23, 1921 to Marion and Laura Blanchfield. She lived with her parents and four siblings, Verle, Arvil, Rhea, and Genova on the family farm until age 18. After graduating from high school, she pursed her dream to move west to southern California. While learning to dance at the Arthur Murray dance studio, she met and fell in love with William August Brumm. They married in 1941.
During World War II, Rheta was very proud to have contributed to the war effort by working in aircraft manufacturing. William served in the Army. They were blessed to have three beautiful daughters: Melanie, Shiara and Virdette who were the light of Rheta’s life.
After the girls were raised, Rheta began a very successful career in real estate sales in southern California which she enjoyed for the next 25 years. Rheta spent many wonderful years at her home on Highland tending her gardens and enjoying time with the second love of her life, Arno Heckrodt. After Rheta retired, she and Arno moved to Carmel, California in 2003. Among her many passions, she was an avid gardener, a devoted parishioner at Carmel Presbyterian Church, dedicated volunteer for numerous causes and ardent lover of politics, basketball and football. Rheta adored birds and had many over her lifetime.
Rheta had a zest for life, which truly made her one of the best. She always chose to have a good day and love her life. Her outgoing personality and contagious laughter lit up a room. To say she will be missed is a profound understatement.
Rheta is survived by her dear daughters and sons-in-law, Melanie and Harvey Billig, Shiara and Richard Kirsch, and Virdette Brumm and Robertson Parkman. She has two beloved granddaughters and their husbands, Nicole and Ken Pazdan, Ariana and Aaron Muth, and five beautiful great grandchildren, Monty Contente, Jr., Nathan Contente, Caleb Contente, Gabriella Muth and Dalton Muth. She is also survived by her sister Rhea and by her loving nieces and nephews, Roger and Lou Blanchfield, Virginia and Tim Waterhouse, Dana and Barbara Blanchfield, Perry and Linda Blanchfield, Michelle and Marvin Crumbliss, Renee Blanchfield, Evetta Blanchfield, Treva Burke, Ronald Brown and Kendal Brown.
