Lake City – Margaret Winker, 56, died at her home on Thursday, March 26, 2020.
Margaret (known as Markie to her siblings) was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Edwin and Anna Mae (Hewitt) Hirschberg on August 12, 1963. Markie was welcomed home by siblings Patty, Jim, and Cathy. Brother Steve made an appearance 15 months later. Markie grew up on the family farm outside of Lohrville and did the things farm girls used to do; gather eggs, walked beans, helped mom in the kitchen, spent time outdoors and loved riding her horse.
One year for Christmas Markie and Cathy got an Easy Bake oven which kindled Markie’s love of cooking for family and friends- and of course everyone loved being the recipients. Because she was blonde and cooked, her siblings drew a correlation to the cooking misadventures of Miss Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies so for many years Markie was teased with the nickname Elly May.
Markie had a caring and loving heart. She devoted her life to making the lives of others better. She enjoyed her coworkers at Opportunity Living and loved the clients she took care of. Besides cooking, her other passion was gardening. She found joy and peace sitting in the garden pulling weeds and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed chatting with friends on social media.
Her children Shannon and Hunter were equal in her eyes and she spoke of each with the same love even though they were separated by many miles. Her other “child” and protector was Sparky- her Great Dane who Markie shared her bed with every night even though he was twice her size.
Let’s remember these words that she would often say, “It takes nothing to be nice, so, how hard can that be?”
Markie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Steve.
Due to the limits on crowd gatherings a service for Markie will be held at a later date.
